A Beloved Bunny Who Hopped into Our Hearts

This semester, we bid a heartfelt farewell to Gonzalez, the cherished rabbit of Oak Class and a beloved member of the MST community. Gonzalez, fondly known as "Gonzy," passed away on 14 January due to acute gastric dilatation at the remarkable age of 12—equivalent to about 100 in human years.

Gonzalez’s legacy at MST began over nine years ago when he first joined Oak Class as the class pet. Known for his lively spirit and gentle demeanor, he brought endless joy and comfort to the children who cared for and learned from him. Despite his advanced age, Gonzalez remained active and healthy throughout his life, although he began requiring monthly dental care last spring due to aging-related issues.

In December, Gonzalez officially retired from his role as class pet and moved to the home of Oak teacher Maki, his long-time caregiver, where he continued to receive the love and attention he had always known. On his final Sunday night, Gonzalez was his usual cheerful self, happily hopping around, but unfortunately, he injured his leg, which had grown weaker with age. This led to a rapid decline in his condition, and despite the best efforts of Maki and the veterinarian, he passed away peacefully at the clinic this morning.

In his final moments, Gonzalez was surrounded by love, receiving gentle pats and words of gratitude for the joy he brought to so many. Maki reflected, "He might have suffered these past two days, but I believe all his life was very peaceful and joyful with children. He was well-loved by everyone.”

Gonzalez was laid to rest in the MST Garden on 15 January, a fitting tribute to the rabbit who spent so much of his life bringing life and learning to the children of MST. Even now, his face carries the same peaceful, endearing expression that so many came to love.

Willow students Azusa, Rio and Haruka said: “He was very old but very adorable. The funeral was super sad. We put hay, fluff and a towel on the ground, then we touched him and put letters, then soil.”

Thank you, Gonzalez, for your years of companionship and for teaching us about care, empathy, and the beauty of life. You will be deeply missed but always remembered.
