Silva's Remarkable Reforestation Efforts

Silva, a dedicated environmental organization, is making significant strides in rewilding and reforestation efforts, particularly evident in the transformation of the Shonan Meguro no Mori area from a former golf course to a thriving green space. Their recent activities and achievements serve as a beacon of hope for environmental restoration and community engagement.

One of Silva's primary objectives is to prepare the soil for tree planting, scheduled for May, in Shonan Meguro no Mori. The meticulous groundwork involves clearing bamboo, small trees, and bushes, followed by the digging of a one-meter-deep trench along the designated areas. Charcoal is then added to enhance soil quality, crucial for the successful growth of trees. This meticulous preparation ensures that the soil regains its ability to retain water, vital for the sustenance of newly planted trees.

During a recent field trip, participants were actively involved in these restoration activities. Bundling cut vegetation with biodegradable twine and placing them in the prepared trenches was the order of the day. The collective effort mirrored the intricacies of nature, with Silva likening the trench to the veins of the earth, channeling water to nourish the roots of future trees. Despite the rain, spirits remained high, with participants embracing the opportunity to contribute to environmental restoration while reveling in the beauty of nature.

Willow Teacher Kelly Godsoe observed that “despite the rain, or perhaps because of it, the children seemed energized by this field work experience in nature. It was gratifying to see them so happily working together carrying and tying up sticks and brush in the pouring rain. This appeared to be their natural habitat!”

Silva's approach to reforestation, spanning over a decade, is rooted in the principles of the Miyawaki Method, a philosophy inspired by nature's intrinsic wisdom. By observing and learning from natural ecosystems, Silva strikes a delicate balance between intervention and allowing nature to take its course. Their philosophy echoes the guiding principles of Montessori education, emphasizing autonomy and respect for the natural order.

Ms. Kawashita, a representative of Silva, shared insightful anecdotes illustrating the resilience of native forests in mitigating disasters. The story of how native forests saved thousands during a devastating earthquake underscores the invaluable role of natural ecosystems in safeguarding lives. Through Silva's innovative reforestation methods, inspired by the Miyawaki Method, the timeline for natural rewilding is significantly accelerated, from centuries to decades. This remarkable feat, Ms. Kawashita emphasized, is a testament to humanity's capacity for positive environmental stewardship.

Silva's unwavering commitment to environmental restoration and community involvement exemplifies the transformative potential of collective action. As demonstrated in the Shonan Meguro no Mori project, the convergence of scientific knowledge, community engagement, and reverence for nature can pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future.

Sustainability Lead Naoko Kikkawa concludes “by celebrating their accomplishments, Silva instills hope and inspires others to embark on their journey towards environmental stewardship, reminding us that together, we can achieve remarkable feats in healing our planet.”
