Steps Forward for Bidii Yetu

MST is gratified to share an update about our ongoing partnership with Bidii Yetu, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of refugees at Kakuma Refugee Camp in northwestern Kenya. Established in 1992, Kakuma is home to over 612,000 refugees from 13 countries, many of whom face significant challenges, particularly in accessing quality education and basic facilities.

Bidii Yetu, meaning "Our Diligence" in Swahili, was founded by Martin Abumba, a refugee committed to enhancing education and community well-being within Kakuma. The organization works to support education for refugee children, promote permaculture and environmental sustainability, and assist people with disabilities. MST parent Vincent Valdmann has spearheaded a collaboration with Bidii Yetu, reflecting the Montessori values of compassion and global community.

Thanks to the generous support of the MST community, we are delighted to announce that we have raised enough funds to build much-needed toilets for the Kakuma Refugee Camp. Access to proper sanitation facilities is crucial for maintaining health, hygiene, and dignity in the camp. This achievement represents a significant step toward improving the living conditions for residents, particularly students, who can now focus on their education without the added stress of inadequate sanitation.

The MST community has shown commitment to the cause through initiatives such as second-hand clothing sales at the school picnic and contributions from supportive parents and families. With the toilets funded, MST and Bidii Yetu are looking forward to addressing other pressing needs in the camp, such as providing school materials, establishing a community garden, and building playgrounds. These projects aim to create a more nurturing and sustainable environment for the children and families of Kakuma.

We thank the MST community for embodying the Montessori spirit of giving and for supporting this project. Together, we are making a meaningful difference in the lives of the children at Kakuma Refugee Camp.

Stay tuned for updates on upcoming fundraising efforts and milestones for Bidii Yetu!
